The Thinning Veil is a new music and film project that was born out of a collaboration between filmmakers Natasha Duffy and Shane O'Callaghan and renowned composer Michael Gallen, featuring performances from some of Ireland’s most exciting folk and trad artists.

What originated as a live event in the heart of Monaghan's boglands of Knockatallon has now realised itself as an EP and experimental film - watch above.

The Thinning Veil explores states of change and flux. Between past and present, living and dead as well as tradition and modernity.

The backdrop of the unique Bragan Bogland plays host to all of these themes.

The film follows 'The Bragan Wanderer’ as he traverses the boglands of Monaghan, where he has cut turf since boyhood. Based loosely on director and producer Natasha Duffy’s own grandfather Barney Carolan, who used to foot turf in this area of bogland, it leans into themes of death, crossing over and the displacement that comes from environmental changes.

The soundtrack features poignant songs and tunes, including some from the Oriel region (straddling the borders of southeast Ulster and north Leinster) that were lost for generations, reimagined beautifully Michael Gallen and a team of leading Irish folk musicians that includes singer and fiddler Rose Connolly, uilleann piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and sean-nós singer and multi-instrumentalist Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin.
