In the 1st place avoid (if possible) partnerships with "individuals" whose values, vision and mission do not align with yours. You don't have to dance if you are not on the dance floor.

I have found that agreement on key messages, tied to the impact report supplied by your organisation, will stop 'bracket creep' or the erosion of your platform. Financial agreements should establish parameters early, so there are no nasty surprises when the partnership/ sponsorship goes public. Your Brand should not be sacrificed for the dollar. Once major donors suspect that your organisation is losing sight of its mission, they will withdraw. Personal and organisational integrity will help to maintain the authenticity that major donors and supporters want to see in all your endeavours.

Twice, I have found myself in a position needing to guard our mission. This is what helped me: 1. I was clear from the word go on our engagement and that was clearly communicated. I ensured to state my non-negotiables regarding our collaboration, and that was clearly included in the MoU. 2. I address any issues or concerns on the go. We have a weekly review of more involving projects and a monthly review of the less involving ones. This ensures alignment is maintained throughout. 3. I have maintained a high level of engagement and transparency with partners and stakeholders and more importantly, I have stood my ground when something was not right and addressed it.

I believe partnerships with corporate giants are strategic—not defining. We align only with those who respect our mission and values. By maintaining clear goals, setting boundaries, and keeping our community’s needs at the forefront, we ensure that every collaboration serves the purpose—not the partner. Our mission remains the compass that guides every decision.

We stay true to our mission by holding onto our core values and ensuring every partnership aligns with our vision. We carefully choose corporate partners who share our commitment, set clear boundaries in our agreements, and keep our goals front and center. Regular reviews and open communication help us balance corporate interests with our cause, so our mission always comes first.
