To ensure subcontractors consistently meet industry standards, start with clear agreements that define quality expectations. Regular audits and real-time monitoring help catch issues early. Keep communication transparent and structured, and provide ongoing training to align everyone. Use KPIs and performance reviews to maintain accountability. Most importantly, make compliance part of the company culture—when everyone understands its value, standards aren’t just followed, they become a natural part of how business is done.

In my experience, the main problem is when the subcontractor misunderstands the engineering, specifications, and technical documents or even doesn't use them. Therefore to ensure that the works meet the standards, ask them if they understand the requirements and be sure that they have read the technical documents after that if they have no doubts, overseeing will be easy and the work will meet the standards.

A few things to consider: - Describe your industry and/or internal standards clearly in contracts, or RFQs and request explicit compliance from your potential subcontractors before engaging - Once engaged/contracted, establish a clear communications plan, part of an overall project plan that includes reporting on compliance to standards, gaps, and remedial actions - Enterprise Architecture practices and tools can also help here

I managed 15 companies for the installation of 9,000 km of fiber optic cable throughout Mongolia between 2011 and 2015. After that experience, I understood that frequent daily reports, picture documentation, and on-site supervisors are essential for monitoring the quality and standards of a subcontractor’s installation and completion. For OSP projects, concealment reports are crucial for verifying compliance with required standards and quality.

Before starting the project, we will thoroughly assess the subcontractor. First, we will review their past experiences to ensure they are relevant to our work and demonstrate the necessary expertise. Next, we will evaluate their financial capability to invest in materials, equipment, and other resources required for the project. If they meet these qualifications, we will proceed with a pilot scheme, which is a small-scale version of the project. For example, if we have a large network to implement, we will ask them to implement a smaller network first, and we will conduct all necessary tests on it. If they succeed in this phase, we will continue working with them. This process ensures both quality and quantity are assessed effectively.
