You're juggling administrative tasks and physician initiatives. How do you strike the right balance?

In healthcare, juggling administrative tasks alongside physician initiatives can be daunting. To strike the right balance:

- Set clear priorities by identifying which tasks impact patient care the most and tackle those first.

- Allocate specific times for administrative work to ensure it doesn't overshadow patient-centered projects.

- Foster open communication between administrative and clinical teams to align goals and share responsibilities.

What strategies do you use to maintain balance between these demanding roles in healthcare?

I have allocated days for admin work and clinical commitments and don’t mix unless some urgency! Plan ahead for a week, month, years and 5 years separately. Maintain a journal separately for clinical and administrative job. Avoid micro management. Prioritise and Delegate according to the significance, sensitivity, your interest areas and importantly skills set.

Staff is key in making it working. My front desk/ office manager is experienced and knows how to make it work . On the other hand, I try not to overstretch myself either with administrative duties. Team makes it work !

Some administrative tasks can be delegated. Hire staff who want to grow and trust them to do the delegated tasks without micromanaging.

Balancing administrative tasks with physician initiatives requires effective time management and collaboration. Prioritize tasks based on their impact on patient care, and schedule uninterrupted blocks for administrative work. Delegate where possible to ensure focus remains on key initiatives. Use project management tools to track both clinical and administrative tasks, ensuring nothing is overlooked. Regular communication between the administrative team and physicians helps align priorities and share the workload. By staying organized and open to collaboration, you can better balance these important responsibilities.

Balancing admin work and physician initiatives is about aligning goals, not dividing time. Here’s my approach: - Prioritize impact: Focus on initiatives that enhance both operational efficiency and patient care. - Streamline with tech: Use digital tools to automate routine admin tasks, freeing time for strategic projects. - Collaborate openly: Maintain clear communication with physicians, align on shared goals to avoid friction. It’s not admin vs. care, it’s integrating both to drive better outcomes.

Schedule my admin time and clinical time on a weekly calendar so that my employees know what I’m doing. My doctors will get me for whatever their needs are at any given time.

Be realistic with what you can accomplish alone. Don’t be afraid to empower your staff to take on challenging tasks that you feel only you can do, but be sure to create an environment in which they feel supported.
