When sustainability targets are missed, managing stakeholder expectations requires honesty, accountability, and a proactive approach. Start by communicating transparently about the reasons behind the setback, avoiding defensiveness while focusing on lessons learned. Reassess and adjust goals if needed, presenting a revised, realistic plan with clear timelines and actionable steps. Engage stakeholders in the solution by seeking their input and collaboration, ensuring they feel part of the recovery process. Highlight progress made in other areas to maintain trust and confidence, and commit to regular updates to demonstrate accountability and rebuild momentum.

Finding that you have not achieved your sustainability goals is frustrating, but it is important to ensure that stakeholders’ expectations are maintained by providing them with feedback and a proper roadmap on the way forward. With that, begin active and open reporting on events and status, including the things that did not go as planned and what is being done to move forward. This is the time also to factor in new goals and to establish smaller achievable objectives in between that will show the progress. By sharing and consulting stakeholders, everyone would be on the same side working towards the goals and coming up with solutions.
