In sustainability partnerships, effectively managing conflicts of interest is key to success. Conflicts often arise when parties prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability goals, or when personal, organizational, or financial interests clash with collective environmental objectives. Establish clear expectations by defining roles, goals, and boundaries upfront, and promote open communication to address concerns and clarify misunderstandings. Focus on common sustainability objectives to ensure alignment, and negotiate fair, win-win solutions that respect all parties' interests.

This issues is common place within the fashion industry, where Brands want to be seen to be sustainable but don’t necessarily want to invest. Here are 2 things I’ve found helpful when sustainability goals are in conflict with other company KPIs: 1) to try and understand the opposite point of view. Teams are naturally pitched against each other with one wanting low impact design and the other needing margin gains. It is always possible to find a balance. 2) Be creative! Think laterally to reach the same goal. It’s a misconception that sustainability is always at a cost. For instance in the fashion industry testing products virtually using AI and 3D can reduce margins and save cost simultaneously. There is always a creative solution.

The first step in navigating sustainability partnerships is recognizing where business goals and sustainability commitments may misalign. Conflicts can arise from greenwashing risks, financial priorities, or differing sustainability agendas, potentially undermining the partnership’s credibility. To prevent future issues, it’s essential to thoroughly assess potential areas of contention and be transparent from the start. By openly addressing these conflicts early on, organizations can build trust, accountability, and a stronger foundation for long-term collaboration.

Imagine you’re working on a sustainability project with a company that wants to go green. But then you realize—they also have practices that harm the environment. Now you’re stuck. Do you stay and try to change things or walk away? The key is honesty. Be clear about your goals from the start. Set rules that keep everyone accountable. Bring in outside experts to keep things fair. Listen to different opinions and address concerns early. If issues come up, tackle them openly. By staying true to your mission and keeping things transparent, you can turn challenges into real progress.

The path to credibility lies in resolving conflicts of interest with integrity. It also presents an opportunity to review partnerships, define clear boundaries, and address conflicts in sustainability through open discussions and focused collaboration. By doing so, stakeholders can align on shared sustainable interests. Conflicts often arise due to a lack of trust and clarity in plans, but fostering transparency and mutual understanding can lead to more effective and lasting solutions.

Truth is, sustainability partnerships get messy when interests collide. Start by laying all cards on the table early. What does each partner truly want? Create clear decision-making rules. When conflicts arise (they will!), you'll need this established process. Some tension is healthy - the profit-purpose push-pull drives innovation. Manage this tension rather than trying to eliminate it. Bring in neutral third parties when things heat up. Keep documentation transparent so everyone understands decisions, even unpopular ones. Schedule regular check-ins to reassess partnership alignment as priorities evolve.
