Your team is divided on the best sustainable project approach. How will you lead them to a unified solution?

When your team is split on the best sustainable project approach, leadership is key to forging a unified path. To steer everyone towards consensus:

- Engage in active listening to understand each viewpoint and acknowledge the concerns behind them.

- Identify common values and objectives that resonate with all team members as a foundation for agreement.

- Facilitate a collaborative decision-making process, allowing each voice to contribute to the final strategy.

When your team is split on the best sustainable project approach, leadership is key to forging consensus by reaffirming shared sustainability goals, encouraging open dialogue, and leveraging data-driven insights. Facilitate collaborative problem-solving to integrate the best ideas, then make a decisive yet inclusive choice that balances innovation, practicality, and impact. Once a direction is set, reinforce commitment by clearly communicating the rationale and ensuring alignment for effective execution. As Colin Powell said, “Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them.”

    1. Open Communication: Initiate open discussions to understand each team member's priorities and perspectives. This fosters transparency and encourages collaboration. 2. Define Common Goals: Establish clear, shared objectives that align with both the organization’s sustainability vision and individual team members' interests. This helps unify efforts towards a common purpose. 3. Foster Cross-Department Collaboration: This can help break down silos and enhance overall project effectiveness. 4. Identify ESG Champions: 5. Provide Training and Resources: 6. Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular meetings to assess progress, address concerns, and adjust strategies as needed.

I believe the key to unifying a team on a sustainable project approach is fostering collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and a shared vision. I would facilitate open discussions to understand different perspectives, align priorities with business and environmental goals, and use clear metrics to evaluate options objectively. Encouraging a solutions-focused mindset and finding common ground ensures that the chosen approach is both impactful and practical. A strong leader brings the team together by reinforcing that sustainability is not just an initiative—it’s a collective responsibility. #SustainableLeadership #Collaboration #Innovation

Begin by aligning the team around a shared vision of sustainability. Organise a focused discussion where everyone outlines their ideas and concerns. Establish clear, objective criteria (impact, feasibility, cost-effectiveness) to evaluate each approach. Use data and expert insights to guide the decision, and consider small pilot projects to test options. Encourage collaboration by forming sub-teams and ensuring open, respectful communication. By grounding decisions in shared values and transparent criteria, you can build consensus and lead the team to a unified sustainable solution. #SustainableSolutions #GreenInnovation #Sustainability

The key is to align them on impact, not opinions. One principle from "The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team" that I use at Share At Door Step is creating clarity around the goal, not just the strategy. Instead of debating which project is “better,” we start with: -What problem are we solving? -What measurable impact do we want? -What resources do we realistically have? E.g. when planning impact initiatives, some team members wanted large-scale campaigns, while others preferred grassroots efforts. Rather than forcing a choice, we tested both approaches—starting with a small pilot and tracking engagement. Data, not debate, led the way. Focus on shared outcomes, encourage small experiments, and let results drive decisions—not personal preferences.

Listen! Understand why there are different views and how different they really are. Understand what the common elements are and decide if you will help them find a third way they are happy with, or how to combine the different sets of ideas, or which stakeholders need to be told their route is not the chosen one. People hate uncertainty so decide approach as soon as is practical and then focus on getting people behind it, rather than taking ages to to make a compromise decision.
