When grant requirements don’t match a program’s vision, I treat it like a negotiation, not a surrender. I look for loopholes; areas where grant language is vague enough to allow creative interpretation. If a grant insists on specific deliverables that don’t fully serve the mission, I structure them in a way that leaves room for deeper impact, or educate the granter on why our data over their requirements is the best determinent for grant deliverables. I also stack funding strategically, using unrestricted dollars to cover what restricted grants won’t. When a grant is too far off course? I walk away. Not all money is good money, and if funding forces a program to betray its purpose, it’s not worth the cost.
