A dynamic organization is always reevaluating its processes. First, we need to ask: Does the current state align with our sustainability goals? If the current stagnation effectively meets the organization’s responsibilities toward stakeholders, it might be best to maintain the status quo rather than making impulsive changes. Sometimes, doing nothing is better than disrupting a stable system. However, sustainability and its benchmarks are constantly evolving. To stay ahead, organizations should actively follow emerging trends and continuously update their sustainability knowledge. This ensures that when opportunities for meaningful improvements arise, the organization is well-equipped to implement them effectively.

If your sustainability programs have stalled, it’s likely because they feel too abstract, too complex, or too disconnected from what people actually care about. People engage with what they understand and what moves them. Strip away the jargon, make sustainability tangible, and show how it impacts their daily work and lives. Create simple, actionable steps that every employee can take and make the impact visible. Sustainability isn’t just a corporate strategy, it’s a human one. When people feel it, they’ll own it.

If your sustainability efforts feel stagnant, shift your perspective by focusing on systemic change rather than isolated initiatives. Rethink your approach by embedding sustainability into core business strategies rather than treating it as a separate function. Consider financial sustainability alongside environmental goals, ensuring cost-effectiveness and long-term viability. Engage skeptics by framing sustainability as an opportunity for innovation, competitive advantage, and risk management rather than just a compliance requirement. Measure impact beyond traditional metrics—look at social equity, resilience, and regenerative practices to create a truly transformative approach.

I have observed over time that in order to have an engaged workforce when it comes to sustainability efforts, you need to ensure the following: 1. Leadership Buy-In Setting the tone from the top is of utmost importance, it shows the organisation is committed to the course. 2. Continuous Engagement Give the organisations feedback on initiatives that are currently happening and how they can get involved, ensure that you are agile in how you present the initiative - accommodate the teams that may not be available at the certain season (i.e. Year End or Audit Peak Season) 3. Conduct Feedback session each FY Ensure that the strategies deployed are in line with employee values and ethos. i.e., Mils and GenZs are big on environmental S

Sustainability programs within the organization are vital nowadays. It is essential to carry them out within your organization. Getting challenges on the way to success is routine. Here's how you can tackle the challenges. 1. Reopen the discussion of the goals & targets for the program to the team and involved parties. 2. Draw visions & plans for the program and make sure all team members are on the same page. 3. Speed bumps are to be expected, and strategies accordingly and adapt the "think outside the box" mentality within the team. A great team that understands the plan & shares the same vision will undoubtedly breathe new life into the paused/stagnant sustainability program.

I would 100% say to collaborate externally. Your company is good at what they do, they shouldn't try to be the best at sustainability, there are others that can create the right strategy that fits into your companies operating model

Get involved with local events and collaborate with other businesses. Maybe think outside the box and renovate some unused space in your city adding some trees and flowers. Most of all though, is get your team involved and use their skills and talents to enhance your sustainability story 🐝

Sustainability is based on a solid foundation but its development is very dynamic given its synergy with latest technological advancements and the new challenges we discover and invent. To keep pace with these there need to be periodic reviews to keep the sustainability strategy aligned with the times. Additionally, workshops and brain storming sessions can be very fruitfull to give the bright young minds space to make use of creativity and their passion. Also, to keep sustainability programs alive and dynamic sustainability as a concept need to be made a part of everything you do professionally and personally. Sustainability cannot be achieved in a separate silo !!!
