Power struggles within a community organizing team can be deeply disruptive, creating both internal and external challenges that hinder progress and damage the group's cohesion. In a community organizing context, the ultimate goal is to address issues and advocate for collective change, but when personal or group dynamics are driven by competition for power, the mission can easily become sidelined.

When power struggles happen, most times, someone is feeling the need to establish themselves for what they are truly worth. So it suffices to say someone is feeling undermined. Start by bringing everyone to the table for open conversation. Let everyone share their concerns. Encourage everyone to be open. When having these conversations, ensure that the uniting factor is 'the progress of the goal' that brought the team together. Also, address the concerns and re-establish roles and authority. Let everyone feel empowered enough to contribute their best.

Power struggles in community organizing teams can be challenging. To navigate and resolve power struggles is to recognize the issue and create a safe space for open discussion, by understanding the underlying needs, values, and concerns driving the conflict. Then, encouraging team members to truly hear each other's perspectives, refocusing on the team's common objectives and mission also help to promote a collaborative environment, considering re-allocation of responsibilities or decision-making authority also helps to promote a more collaborative environment. All these help to effectively navigate power struggles and strengthen community organizing team.

Power struggles? I see them as signals—not setbacks. 💥 In community work, I lean into active listening, shared purpose, and transparent dialogue to turn tension into transformation. I create space for every voice, clarify roles, and refocus the team on why we started. Unity isn’t automatic—it’s built through trust and accountability. 🛠️🫱🏽🫲🏼

Power struggles in a community organizing team can stall progress and damage trust. Start by identifying the root causes—often unmet needs, miscommunication, or lack of clarity. Create a space for open, respectful dialogue where all voices are heard. Revisit shared goals to realign the team around a common purpose. Clarify roles, responsibilities, and decision-making processes to reduce ambiguity. Encourage collaboration over competition by recognizing contributions and reinforcing interdependence. If tensions persist, consider bringing in a neutral facilitator to mediate. Most importantly, lead with empathy and transparency. Navigating power struggles isn’t about winning—it’s about rebuilding trust and creating space for shared leadership.

Power struggles can hurt teamwork, so addressing them early is key. Start by listening to all sides, understanding concerns helps ease tension. Stay neutral and focus on common goals rather than personal conflicts. Encourage open, respectful discussions where everyone feels heard. If needed, set clear roles and decision-making processes to prevent confusion. Remind the team why you’re working together in the first place. Lead by example: stay professional, solution-focused, and willing to compromise. When the team unites around shared values, power struggles fade, and progress happens!
