Healthcare organizations need to leverage data and analytics to gain insights into patient demand patterns and adjust their inventory levels accordingly. By analyzing historical data, market trends, and patient demographics, healthcare providers can make more accurate demand forecasts and optimize their inventory management practices. This can help prevent stockouts or overstocking, reducing costs and ensuring timely availability of critical supplies.

Accurate forecasting in a healthcare facility’s supply chain is all about data, strategy, and adaptability. In my workplace, we rely on previous consumption patterns to predict future demand, ensuring we don’t overstock or run out of critical supplies. To prevent stockouts, we also maintain security stock, so essential items remain available even before new shipments arrive. Proper inventory management is key. We strictly follow a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) consumption pattern to minimize waste and ensure older stock is used first. Additionally, we use the isystock software to monitor inventory levels, expiration dates, and damages, helping us maintain efficiency and reduce losses.

In Nigeria’s healthcare—where most medicines and consumables rely on imports—accurate demand forecasting isn’t just helpful; it’s critical for survival. To avoid stockouts or overstocking, facilities must plan at least 6-9 months. Here’s how we can optimise supply chain resilience: ✅ AI & Data-Driven Forecasting – Leveraging intelligent inventory management systems with predictive analytics can drastically improve accuracy, reducing waste and ensuring lifesaving supplies are always available. ✅ Vendor Collaboration – Working with suppliers on sustainable credit terms can ease cash flow pressures while maintaining consistent stock levels. At Surjen Healthcare, we’re exploring these strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s medical supply chain.
