The interview platform crashes unexpectedly. How will you navigate this unexpected setback?

An unexpected crash during a critical interview can be nerve-wracking, but staying calm and prepared can save the day. Here's how to handle it:

  • Stay calm and communicate: Immediately inform the interviewee about the technical issue and reassure them that it will be resolved shortly.

  • Have a backup plan: Always have an alternative method, such as a phone call or another video platform, ready to go.

  • Reschedule if necessary: If the issue persists, promptly offer to reschedule at a convenient time for all parties.

It can be daunting after you meticulously set up interviews and have taken care of the fine details to have the interview platform crash. I think it is an opportunity to demonstrate your problem solving skills in the moment and your resilience. It is always a good idea to have multiple interview platforms so that you can easily switch in case there is a technical issue or have a teleconference service as a last resort where you may have tech outages. As much as it is stressful for you to be in a situation where the interview platform is not working, it is probably ten times more nerve wracking for the candidate. Be sure to communicate with empathy and transparency. I find humour in such situations helps set the candidate at ease.

Stay calm, communicate promptly with the interviewee, apologize for the inconvenience, and suggest rescheduling or switching to an alternative platform. Ensure clear follow-up to maintain professionalism.

If the interview platform crashes unexpectedly, stay calm and composed. Immediately reach out to the interviewer or hiring manager, either through email or phone, to explain the situation. Let them know you're actively working on resolving the issue and offer to reschedule if needed.

It's not unusual for technical challenges to occur during a video interview. That's why it's so important to test the platform before the interview and have another device ready as a backup. Should unexpected issues arise during the interview, and both platforms fail, contact the interviewer immediately and explain your situation. Ask if they prefer to reschedule or conduct the interview by phone at this time. Proceed as requested.
