It was on an Italian beach in the summer of 2002, under the dangerous blaze of the afternoon sun that for a short time, our daughter got lost. 

A month away from her fourth birthday I still have a technicolour image of that version of her: the small swimsuit with a low-waisted frill and a red flower print. Her pale skin slathered in sunscreen, a little hat shading her face, her strong small stocky legs, always running...
