In Out & Proud, a new series on RTÉ Radio 1, Trevor Keegan chats to prominent people from the LGBTQIA+ community about how they've embraced their identity and are living their lives out and proud.

Author and screenwriter of Room and The Wonder, Emma Donoghue joined Trevor from Paris where she's spending the summer with her family. Emma spoke to Trevor about first love, coming out, embracing her identity fully as a student in Cambridge and ultimately moving to Canada and starting a family with her partner.

As they discussed the importance of representation, Emma recalled appearing on The Late Late Show in 1993 and being denounced from the pulpit afterwards.

Some weeks later she received a letter from a woman in Mayo who saw the interview and thanked her for speaking out. Trevor found that same letter and read it to Emma who, almost 30 years later, was still moved by it.
