Ben Dunne apologises on radio to Mary Manning the day after a plaque was erected to her.
On 8 March 2008, the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, South African president Thabo Mbeki dedicated a plaque to Mary Manning. It was later erected outside Dunnes Stores in Henry St, Dublin. An unveiling ceremony was held on 18 June 2008. The following day, the supermarket chain’s former director Ben Dunne happened to be on RTÉ Radio One’s ‘Liveline’ discussing a different issue when a caller to the show brought up the Dunnes Stores strike. Dunne said he would apologise to Mary Manning for his family firm’s treatment of her if given the opportunity.
In this extract from later in the programme, Dunne apologises in a personal capacity to Manning, who is now on the phone line, and offers to apologise personally to the other strikers.
