The family of Jason Corbett have asked for privacy in the aftermath of the conviction of Molly Martens Corbett and Tom Martens for manslaughter in the United States.
They were sentenced to prison terms of between four and seven years, including time already served.
Tom Martens' lawyer expects him to be freed in seven months.
Mr Corbett, 39, was beaten to death at his home in North Carolina in August 2015.
In a statement released to media organisations last night, the Corbett family said now is not a moment for celebration.
But they said they can still find a path to move forward with their lives, and said Jason Corbett's children, Jack and Sarah, had the opportunity in victim impact statements made in court to communicate unencumbered and without hinderances.
They said that while they may not be satisfied with the sentences handed down to Tom Martens and Molly Martens Corbett, they acknowledged the dedication and hard work of the Davidson Country Sheriff's department and District Attorney’s Office over the past eight years.
They are deeply grateful for the support they have received from the people of North Carolina and Ireland, the statement added.
Molly and Tom Martens spent the night in Davidson Country Jail and are expected to be transferred to state correctional facilities later today.
Corbett family statement in full
While this is not a moment for celebration for us, we can still find a path to move forward with our lives.
Jack and Sarah have at last had the chance to communicate unencumbered and without hindrances.
While we may not be satisfied with the sentencing, we would like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work exhibited by the Davidson County Sheriff department and the District Attorney's office throughout the past eight years.
We are deeply grateful for the support we have received from the people of North Carolina and Ireland, and we kindly ask for privacy as our family moves forward, with the comforting knowledge that Jason will forever hold a place in our hearts and memories.
Tracey, Dave, Dean, Adam, Jack and Sarah.
