In the wake of the 7 October Hamas attacks into southern Israel which killed more than 1400 people, the Israeli Defense Forces launched a massive campaign of air strikes on hundreds of locations across Gaza.
It also cut power and water supplies to the enclave and closed the border to food imports.
More recently, it has begun ground operations into the enclave.
Since 30 October, footage has emerged of Israeli tanks positioned on a key route running north-south through the Gaza Strip, Salah al-Din Road. Analysts and journalists have confirmed other activity in parts of northern Gaza, despite intermittent communication blackouts and military secrecy surrounding where and how Israeli ground operations are proceeding.
On 3 November, the Israeli military said it had encircled Gaza City, in the north of strip.
The Israeli military says the campaign is intended to remove Hamas from Gaza and rescue hostages. It has ordered hundreds of thousands of people living in northern Gaza to evacuate south of Wadi Gaza, a wetland in the centre of the Gaza Strip.
However, many have been unable or unwilling to do so, for a variety of personal, medical, safety or other reasons – including Irish citizen Zak Hania and his family, who are in Gaza City.

Hamas and other Palestinian groups took more than 230 people captives on 7 October and are thought to be holding them in the vast network of tunnels below Gaza. Israel rescued one hostage during nighttime operations in the enclave, a small number of others have been released by Hamas.

Thousands of people have been killed in Gaza since 7 October, as Israeli air strikes have flattened entire city neighbourhoods. The Israeli military says several key Hamas commanders have also died in the strikes.
