Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald had to be escorted from an event in East Wall last night after a number of people surrounded her car and shouted at her.

The party said Ms McDonald was attending a meeting with a local community group on preparations for Christmas.

The group shouted at the Sinn Fein leader as she left the event.

Ms McDonald has been a TD for the Dublin Central constituency since 2011.

A man was subsequently arrested for a separate incident at the same gathering after Ms McDonald had left the area.

Gardaí say he was detained at a garda station before being released pending an adult caution.
