This can definitely be a challenge as the trust relationship has been change if they were not aware of you search, but it not irrepairable. It comes down to an open and honest conversation from both parties to start repairing the relationship - then the focus needs to be on delivering outcomes and getting the job done, reconfirming your committment to the role, team and organisation.

Tension from a counteroffer is real—but it’s not irreversible. At Remote Recruitment, I’ve seen the power of honest conversations and mutual respect. Reaffirming your commitment post-negotiation is key. Focus on delivering strong results, being present, and reinforcing trust daily. Over time, actions speak louder than negotiations. Workplace tension fades when transparency and performance take the lead.

Navigating the tension with my boss after a counteroffer requires a thoughtful and professional approach. First, I'll take a step back to assess the situation and my emotions, ensuring I'm calm and composed. Next, I'll request a meeting with my boss to discuss the counteroffer and the subsequent tension. During the meeting, I'll listen actively to their concerns and perspectives, acknowledging their point of view. I'll also clearly communicate my own expectations, needs, and motivations, seeking to find common ground. By focusing on the issue rather than making it personal, I aim to diffuse the tension and work collaboratively with my boss to find a mutually beneficial solution.

Tension after a counteroffer is natural—but not unfixable. I always start with transparency: a candid, respectful chat to clear the air and reaffirm my commitment. Actions speak louder, so I follow up by showing up—delivering results, supporting the team, and staying engaged. I also check in regularly to rebuild trust over time. It’s not just about staying—it’s about re-earning the confidence placed in you. Trust, once stretched, can be restored with consistency and care.
